Want to localize your game into Spanish?
Spanish is an Indo-European language (Romance group, Ibero-Romance sub-group). It is written using the Latin alphabet. Spain is the 30th most populous country in the world, with a population of around 47 million people.
With four different co-official languages, being Spanish the most widely spread in the territory. Although different accents and languages exist in Spain, European Spanish is the accepted use of the language in media.
Castilian Spanish or also known as European Spanish is one of the top demanded languages when it comes to localization. The huge size and revenue that the Spanish territory has when it comes to video games makes the language a top priority for developers to localize their game into.
European Spanish is the standard for all entertainment, advertising and commercial audio in Spain. The country has a long-standing tradition of audio localization, as all movies and books released in the country had to be localized by law for decades. This option for audio is usually set by default on all platforms and typically expected by the audience.
In 2021, the gaming market in Spain generated $2.39 billion (according to Newzoo). More than 76% of Spanish 6- to 24-year-olds consider themselves gamers. This figure is 60% for 25- to 34-year-olds, 39% for 35- to 44-year-olds, and just 32% for those 45+. However, it should be noted that the number of older gamers is increasing. They may well be the generation of the video game boom in the 1990s.
According to the AEVI, 18.1 million people in Spain spend more than 8 hours a week playing games. 73.3% of all Spanish gamers say that they play at least once a week, 13.3% play every month, and 6.6% play almost every day. The average spending of Spanish gamers every year is around $51.08. The most-used devices for gaming are consoles and mobile devices. 25% of all gamers use a console as their main device, while 19% use a smartphone. Next come PCs, with 16%, followed by tablets, with 10%, and handheld consoles, with 8%. It is worth noting that Spanish gamers are not set in their ways, and prefer to play on various devices.
