Dutch users around the world

Dutch is a West Germanic language spoken by about 25 million people as a first language and 5 million as a second language. It is the third most widely spoken Germanic language, after its close relatives German and English. Most of the population of the Netherlands and about 60% of the population of Belgium speak Dutch.

Dutch as a language

Outside the Low Countries, Dutch is the native language of the majority of the population of the South American country of Suriname, a former Dutch colony, where it also holds an official status. Dutch is also official in the Caribbean island countries of Aruba, Curaçao and Sint Maarten, which are constituent countries of the Kingdom of the Netherlands. Additionally, up to half a million native speakers reside in the United States, Canada and Australia combined.

Colloquially, Dutch is said to be in between English and German in terms of linguistic characteristics. Dutch grammar is simpler than German grammar but more complex than English grammar. When it comes to lexicon, Dutch vocabulary is mostly Germanic, but it incorporates more Romance loans than German and fewer than English.

Dutch in Game Localization

Video games localized in Dutch have become increasingly popular as the Dutch and Belgian gaming communities continue to grow. Let’s remember that the Netherlands and Belgium are powerful markets with some of the highest purchasing power and GDPs per capita in the world.

According to the EF English Proficiency Index, the Netherlands and Belgium rank respectively 1st and 6th out of 111 countries, with a ” very high” proficiency level. However, Dutch-speaking consumers place a strong emphasis on quality, authenticity, and products tailored to their local context. Therefore, many Dutch consumers favor products and services created in their own language. This is why video game localization could be a great way to attract more customers.

Not only can Dutch localization of video games help developers and publishers reach more customers, but it can also help build brand loyalty, customer engagement and an overall better gaming experience. On Steam, Dutch is the 20th most used language as of February 2023. This is 0.3% of its users. But keep in mind that Steam had 132 million monthly active users in 2021, and it had a peak of 33.2 million concurrent users in January 2023. This proves that most Dutch-speaking gamers will choose their native language when given the option.
